The Dymo LabelManager 280 is one of the few handheld label printers that can print plastic labels either when used with a computer over a USB cable or operate independently using battery power, and is inexpensive as such. For a little more than you'd pay for a standalone portable label printer, you get a more versatile machine.
The Dymo 280 is essentially the Dymo LabelManager 160 ($29.99 list), a purely standalone model, with the added ability to connect to a computer. It is similar to the Dymo LabelManager 420P, with a few differences. Its QWERTY keyboard is an improvement over the Dymo 420P's alphabetical keyboard. The suite of buttons right below the screen, which include the On button, Print command, Menu, a 4-way controller, and a few others, are now labeled, touch-sensitive virtual buttons rather than physical ones. A downside is that the 280's screen isn't backlit like the 420P's, making it harder to read in poor lighting.
The LabelManager 280 measures 3.5 by 7.5 by 9.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 0.9 pounds with battery pack and tape cassette in place. The printer is paddle-shaped?as is the case with the LabelManager 420P?and can be held in one hand. The keyboard is built into the 3-inch-wide handle, and the slightly wider top holds the 2.5-inch two-line monochrome display as well as some virtual buttons.
The Keyboard
An upside for the keyboard is that it's QWERTY style, with a row of number keys on top. The keys are narrow and spaced fairly close together, similar to many phone keyboards though a little wider than most, and typing on it is a little like texting. The Editors' Choice Brother P-touch PT-2730 has a wider keyboard, with keys a bit larger and with more space between them, although typing on it requires a heavier touch.
The keyboard also has a space bar, backspace and carriage return keys, uppercase/lowercase shift, a key to access accents, and one for punctuation. All the punctuation (and other symbols) is lumped together under one button. It's displayed in a scrollable grid, within which you navigate to your chosen character using arrow keys. Granted, punctuation isn't nearly as critical on label printers as on document printers, but it shouldn't take six keystrokes to enter a period.
Printing from a Computer
To use the LabelManager 280 with a computer, you must download software (for either Windows or Mac OS X) from Dymo's site, from a URL given in the quick reference guide. After installing the software, you connect the printer to your computer using the included USB cable.
Printing from a computer has advantages; you can easily save and recover labels, and add images, boxes, and more. It lets you create an address book. Whoever made the sample address book has a sense of humor; one of the labels is for Ralph Cheatham of Dewey, Cheatham and Howe, Esq. However, when I printed out that four-line label on a half-inch wide label, the tiny text was barely readable?three-line labels are more legible. The software also gives you a wide range of fonts to choose from.
When composing a label on the printer itself, you only get three choices for fonts: Basic (sans serif), Serif, and the stylized Fun. Fonts are available under the first of four tabs when you press the Menu key. You can also change type size, add bold or italic text, a border, mirror text, and more. The second tab lets you add symbols (the same choices you get through the punctuation key), as well as clip art, date and time, auto-numbering, or saved text. The third tab lets you access saved labels (you can save up to 9), and the fourth tab lets you save language, label width, and date and time.
The LabelMaker 280 took 9.4 seconds to print a 4-inch label with the text, PCMag: Printer Speed Test. This compares with 11.8 seconds for the Brother PT-2730 and 6.5 seconds for the Dymo 420P to each print out 3.5-inch labels with the same text. However, the Brother automatically snips the label, while with the two Dymo printers you have to manually cut them. That said, speed is a minor issue with a handheld label printer.
Label Cartridge Choices
Dymo offers 18 choices of tape cartridges ($19.99 direct), each 23 feet long, for the LabelManager 280. They vary from a quarter-inch to half-inch wide, and come in clear, white, blue, red, yellow, or green plastic, with various type colors. This is a relatively meager selection, and lacking in specialty labels. Dymo offers 50 label choices for its 420P, at up to ? inches wide, while Brother offers 65 cartridge choices, up to nearly an inch wide, for the PT-2730.
It is easy to recommend the Dymo LabelManager 280 as a handheld label printer that can print either from a PC or as a standalone device. It's relatively inexpensive as such, and offers some advantages over the Dymo 420P, such as the QWERTY keyboard and some touch-sensitive virtual buttons. However, trading the 420P's bright, backlit screen for a smaller, non-backlit e-ink-style display is a step backwards. Also, the Dymo 280 supports a more limited selection of labels, and they max out at only ? inches wide.
The LabelManager 280's keyboard is more cramped than that of the Editors' Choice Brother PT-2730, though it's more responsive. The 280's label selection is much smaller, and it can only save 9 labels in memory, to the Brother's 99. The LabelManager 280 has no individual punctuation keys while the PT-2730 does.
For a little less than you'd pay for the LabelManager 280, you could buy a purely standalone label printer such as the Editors' Choice Brother P-touch PT-D200 , but you'd miss out on the ease and versatility that printing from a computer affords you.
The Dymo LabelManager 280 gives you the versatility of being able to be used either with a computer or as standalone device. Although it lacks some of the features of other such label printers, it comes in at barely half their price. And although it costs a bit more than standalone label printers, it is money well spent.
Justin Bieber may be living life in the fast lane, but when it comes to his home turf, folks literally want him to slow down.
On Monday evening, police visited the singer's Los Angeles home in response to calls complaining about Biebs' alleged reckless driving.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirms to E! News that cops went to the "Beauty and a Beat" crooner's house, but no other information was disclosed.
A source, meanwhile, tells E! News that police received numerous calls on Monday complaining of Bieber's alleged driving while in the neighborhood.
The complaints stated that the star was reckless and drove too fast while children were outside.
This wouldn't be the first time Bieber's faced off with the folks in his 'hood: In March, the 19-year-old was accused of threatening a neighbor and spitting in his face after the two got into an alleged altercation.
E! News has reached out to Bieber's rep for comment.

Angelina Jolie?s aunt has lost her battle with breast cancer, it was reported, just weeks after the Oscar-winning actress announced that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy.
The Hollywood entertainment website E! News cited Jolie?s uncle, Ron Martin, as saying that his wife, Debbie ? the younger sister of Jolie?s late mother ? died early on Sunday at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California.
?Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day,? Martin was quoted as saying on E!?s website.
?They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now she has sent her love and support which was very nice.?
Jolie, 37, announced earlier this month that she chose to undergo surgery to minimize the risk she might develop breast cancer due to the inheritance of a ?faulty gene.?
The actress?s partner and fellow screen star Brad Pitt led worldwide praise, declaring Jolie heroic, followed by her doctors, other stars and thousands of supporters, who took to social media to praise her openness.
Jolie and Pitt have six children ? three adopted and three biological. The actress?s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56 and passed on the gene, BRCA1, that put Jolie at higher risk.
Jolie?s doctors estimated she had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, prompting her to take action to cut the chances that she might die at a young age.
Revealing the procedure in an article in The New York Times, Jolie said her likelihood of developing breast cancer is now just five percent ? although she still runs a relatively high risk of contracting ovarian cancer.
Jolie, respected for her humanitarian work overseas with the UN, said she was speaking out to help other women understand their options, and also to urge governments in lower-income countries to provide the health care women need.
Speaking at the commencement ceremony at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told cadets that sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a "profound betrayal" and charged them with the responsibility to stamp out the sexual assault problem plaguing the military.
"You will need to not just deal with these debilitating, insidious and destructive forces but rather you must be the generation of leaders that stops it. This will require your complete commitment to building a culture of respect and dignity for every member of the military and society," Hagel said as he delivered the commencement address at West Point. "Sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a profound betrayal, a profound betrayal of sacred oaths and sacred trusts. This scourge must be stamped out."
"We are all accountable and responsible for ensuring that this happens. We cannot fail the Army or America. We cannot fail each other, and we cannot fail the men and women that we lead," he said.

Hagel's remarks at the esteemed military academy came during the same week as a U.S. Army sergeant was accused of secretly taking dozens of photos and videotaping naked female West Point cadets over five years.
President Obama addressed the issue of sexual assault in his speech at the commencement ceremonies for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Friday, telling the graduates that there is "no place" for sexual assaults in the military.
"We must acknowledge that even here, even in our military, we've seen how the misconduct of some can have effects that ripple far and wide," Obama said at the Naval Academy commencement ceremony Friday. "Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that make our military strong. That's why we have to be determined to stop these crimes, because they've got no place in the greatest military on Earth."

Over the past month, the military has dealt with a number of sexual assault scandals, causing military leaders and the president to speak out against the problem.
Earlier this month, the lieutenant colonel in charge of the Air Force's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office was arrested for alleged sexual battery, and the Army announced that the coordinator of a sexual assault prevention program at Fort Hood, Texas, was under investigation "for pandering, abusive sexual contact, assault and maltreatment of subordinates."
Hagel
The Pentagon reported this month that 26,000 sexual assaults occurred in the military in 2012, a 37 percent increase since last year.
The figure, coupled with the recent sexual assault cases involving those charged with leading programs to prevent such incidents, led Hagel to order the retraining, re-credentialing and re-screening of all sexual assault prevention coordinators and military recruiters.
Several members of Congress have proposed legislation aiming to stop the sexual assaults occurring in the military.
Earlier this month, a bi-partisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill which would take the prosecution of sexual assaults in the military out of the chain of command, preventing commanders from handling the cases of their subordinates.
NEW YORK (AP) ? Internal Affairs officers on Saturday were looking into allegations made by actress Amanda Bynes that New York Police Department officers sexually assaulted her when she was charged with heaving a marijuana bong out the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.
The 27-year-old former child star first alleged during her arraignment on Friday that police illegally entered her apartment after being called to her midtown building. But in a Twitter message believed to be from the troubled actress posted Saturday, Bynes alleged that her arresting officer also sexually assaulted her.
"As it would with any such allegation, regardless of its credibility, IAB is investigating it," said the NYPD's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, referring to the internal affairs bureau.
The Twitter handle used to make the sexual assault allegations Saturday does not appear to be verified by the social network? but Bynes' friend, former Hollywood publicist Jonathan Jaxson, said Saturday the tweet was made from Bynes' account. Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment.
In court on Friday, the former "Hairspray" star made no mention of the sexual assault allegations, though she did complain of illegal entry to her apartment. She's been charged with reckless endangerment, attempted tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana.
A law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing investigation said the building manager was with officers at Bynes' apartment when they arrived Thursday night. The official said officers were kept waiting approximately five minutes before she opened the door to them. The same official said the building manager told internal affair investigators nothing untoward happened.
Bynes was released by Chief New York County Judge Neil Ross on her own recognizance because, Ross said, he did not believe her to be a flight risk. But in releasing her, Ross also issued a stern warning to Bynes, telling her not to get rearrested or miss any court dates. She's due back in court on July 9.
Attempts to reach Bynes' arraignment lawyer were unsuccessful Saturday evening.
Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A." But she has been in the news more recently because of several scrapes with the law and bizarre public behavior.
Bynes was arrested Thursday night after building officials called police to complain she was rolling a joint and smoking pot in the lobby. The officers went to her apartment where they saw heavy smoke and a bong sitting on the kitchen counter. They said she tossed the bong out the window in front of them, prosecutors said Friday.

LEGAL CONCERNS: Try to Maintain a Reasonable Perspective on Criminal?Assaults

More Thoughts About the Role of Criminal Prosecutions in Preventing Assaults on Youth Sports Officials
By Doug Abrams
?After the recent fatal assault on youth soccer referee Ricardo Portillo in suburban Salt Lake City, last week?s column explained why legislation to criminalize assaults on sports officials remains unnecessary and potentially counter-productive. In every state, a wide array of general-application statutes already criminalizes assaults on any victim, including a sports official. The most effective approach is to enforce these general-application statutes in appropriate cases, and not to enact new statutes whose provisions would tend to duplicate existing law.
To help explain this conclusion, two themes mentioned in last week?s column deserve greater amplification here. First, I wrote that assaults on sports officials sometimes go unprosecuted because law enforcement authorities too often exercise discretion not to arrest, indict or prosecute an assailant.? Second, I suggested that more robust enforcement of criminal laws would likely deter some future assaults on officials. Here I discuss not only the likely reasons for this exercise of discretion, but also the criminal law?s potential for deterrence.?
To maintain proper perspective about antidotes to violence in youth sports, this column concludes with a timely reminder that criminal prosecution should be the last resort, not the first.? The most promising strategy for managing sporadic violence should be education and instruction conducted by youth leagues and interscholastic sports programs, prevention efforts that continue to show much success.??
Reluctance to Enforce
The April 27 assault on Mr. Portillo was unusual because the perpetrator was a player, and not an adult such as a parent or coach. Media reports suggest that nearly all assaults on referees and other officials are committed by adults.?
Prosecutors may resist indicting offending parents or coaches, or may negotiate plea bargains, because winning a conviction can be difficult. ?Except in rare instances when violence is caught on video, the parent or coach need only claim ?self-defense? (?The ref pushed me first?) or provocation (?The ref cussed at me first?) and the case may collapse. The offending adult may have eyewitness friends and allies willing to lie to law enforcement and, if necessary, commit perjury on the witness stand. The case can end as a stalemated ?he said-she said.?
Busy prosecutors also sense that adults charged with youth sports violence tend to make sympathetic defendants because they are usually first-time offenders who hold regular employment.? Aside from their inability sometimes to control themselves in games, they are the kind of people we would be pleased to have as next-door neighbors. Except perhaps where the injury is particularly serious, juries can be sympathetic to adults with clean records who appear contrite for an assault committed in the heat of the moment to defend the perceived interests of their children. And juries often respond to pleas that if the parent or coach lands in prison even briefly, the real loser would be the innocent child at home.
Even when prosecutors do secure a conviction or guilty plea, judges may impose only probation, community service, or some similar sentence that appears like a slap on the wrists. Without a prior criminal record, the defendant may present little likelihood of being a future threat to the community, and not the kind of violent criminal we tend to worry about most.
None of these reasons offers a suitable excuse for under-enforcement or leniency because prosecutors can prevail, and judges can impose meaningful sentences. When prosecutors believe in good faith that proof would support a conviction, they signal social disapproval as much by the charge as by the outcome.
Deterrence
Publicity about prosecutions for assaults on sports officials would likely deter some parents and coaches ? and perhaps many ? from similar behavior. ?In general, the likelihood of deterrence depends on two factors, the nature of the offense and the nature of the offender.
The nature of the offense, by itself, does not hold particular promise in youth leagues because publicized prosecutions are more likely to deter future premeditated crimes than future impulsive crimes of passion. Most assaults on sports officials fall into the second category because I have never heard of a parent or coach who woke up in the morning plotting to attack an official later that day. (Indeed, this lack of premeditation is reportedly what led the Salt Lake City prosecutor to charge Mr. Portillo?s assailant with homicide by assault rather than with murder or manslaughter.)? We cannot count on publicity about criminal prosecutions to deter the sort of unplanned, impulsive behavior that tends to characterize youth sports assaults.
The nature of the offender, however, holds more promise in youth leagues because prosecutions are more likely to deter people who think rationally than people who chronically lack self-control. Despite the usually impulsive nature of attacks on youth sports officials, I suspect that in places where prosecution is a real possibility, publicity does indeed encourage greater self-control in some parents and coaches.?
In youth sports, assaultive adults are normally family people who are trying to earn a living and raise their children, who make good neighbors until the game starts, and who value their jobs and their places in the community. They are not career criminals, and the youth league assault is typically their first brush with the law. Most of all, parents and coaches sense the embarrassment that indictment, prosecution and sentencing would cause them and their families. Word gets around.
Plan A: Adult Education in Youth Sports
As we discuss the criminal process after the Utah homicide, we should not lose perspective.? In youth sports as in other areas of American life, prevention efforts should be the primary anti-violence strategy. Criminal prosecution should be the last resort, reserved for the relatively few persons whose sporadic violence resists efforts to maintain basic standards of civility before anyone strikes a blow. Even with its potential to deter some future acts of violence, prosecution demonstrates breakdown and failure. Someone has already been victimized, and the families of the victim and the perpetrator may suffer life-changing dislocation from legal proceedings. ?
With pre-season parents meetings and generally effective printed materials, youth sports governing bodies and interscholastic sports leagues seek to prevent violence by emphasizing sportsmanship and mutual respect among competitors and their families.? From my years of coaching, I sense that these constructive educational initiatives can create local sports cultures that help insure that outbursts of violence against officials and others remain the exception rather than the rule. Most youth sports parents know right from wrong, and most tend toward civility when leagues, teams, and other parents and coaches lead the way.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market headed lower in midday trading Friday, putting it on track for its first weekly loss in a month.
Shortly after noon, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 28 points at 15,265, a drop of 0.2 percent.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down five points at 1,645, a slip of 0.3 percent.
The market is headed for its first weekly loss in five weeks. Anxiety over the Federal Reserve's bond-buying program was the main culprit. Some investors are concerned that the Fed will scale back its effort to support the economy sooner than they expected.
The S&P 500, widely used by mutual funds as a proxy for the stock market, is down 1.7 percent for the week. It's still up 15 percent so far this year.
Marty Leclerc, the managing partner of Barrack Yard Advisors, an investment firm in Bryn Mawr, Pa., said the weekly drop wasn't cause for concern. Even market rallies have to take the occasional break.
"It's up like a rocket blast this year," he said of the stock market. "For there to be a little bit of a pullback is perfectly understandable."
Sears plunged 17 percent after the department-store chain reported a steep quarterly loss and slumping sales after the market closed Thursday. Sears lost $9.72 to $48.64.
Procter & Gamble surged 4 percent. The household-products giant said late Thursday that it's bringing back its former CEO, A.G. Lafley, to run the company. The world's largest consumer-products maker, whose brands include Tide and Crest, is trying to increase sales in the face of tough competition. P&G rose $3 to $81.70.
The Nasdaq composite sank 11 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,448. Nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 dropped.
Stocks fell Friday despite an encouraging report on U.S. manufacturing. The government said orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rebounded in April, helped by demand for aircraft and stronger business investment. The report suggests economic growth may hold steady this spring.
In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 2.01 percent from 2.02 percent late Thursday.
The price of crude oil fell 66 cents to $93.59 a barrel. Gold slipped $4 to $1,387 an ounce.
Trading was light ahead of the long weekend. U.S. financial markets will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.
Among other stocks in the news Friday:
? Intuitive Surgical gained 5 percent after a jury decided in favor of the maker of robotic medical equipment in the first of many suits filed against the company. The plaintiffs argued that Intuitive was negligent in training doctors to use its equipment. Intuitive's stock rose $24.08 to $502.54.
? Titan Machinery plunged 9 percent. The company, which deals in agricultural and construction equipment, said late Thursday that weaker revenue will lead it to a wider quarterly loss than it had expected. Titan's stock lost $2.04 to $20.47.
OLYMPIA, Washington (Reuters) - A truck crashed into a four-lane freeway bridge in Washington state Thursday evening and may have caused it to collapse, sending vehicles and drivers tumbling into a frigid river, officials said.
A U.S. National Transportation Safety Board investigation into what led part of the Interstate 5 bridge to fall into the Skagit River 55 miles north of Seattle was expected to continue on Friday.
Three people were rescued from the river and no one died, officials said. Two of those rescued were hospitalized with hypothermia.
The freeway is a principal corridor for vehicles between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada. Washington state Governor Jay Inslee said he expected major traffic delays in the region.
State Patrol Chief John Batiste said a semi-trailer truck heading southbound struck the bridge just before part of it collapsed. The bridge has metal overhead beams.
"The size of the load he was carrying appeared to create a problem, causing him to strike the bridge," Batiste said. He said investigators were talking to the driver and inspecting the truck.
State Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson told reporters the bridge was built in 1955. It was not among the more than 150 spans the state Department of Transportation listed as "structurally deficient" in 2011.
In August 2007, a bridge fell into the Mississippi River in Minnesota, resulting in the deaths of 13 people and raising concerns about faulty infrastructure in the United States.
Local television images showed onlookers gathered on the bank of the Skagit River, watching the rescue attempts under the fallen bridge section.
"The currents of the river are really rough. It's cold," Barbara Williams, who lives nearby, told Seattle station KOMO-TV.
State lawmakers are debating a proposed $8.4 billion transportation funding package that Inslee has championed, along with fellow Democrats. A key point of contention has been whether to pay for a new Interstate 5 bridge over the Columbia River connecting Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.

Astronauts who recently returned from the International Space Station discuss their experience during a Google+ Hangout.
By Megan Gannon, Space.com
Three astronauts who recently spent months together aboard the International Space Station reunited on Earth on Thursday during a Google+ Hangout to talk about their experiences aboard the orbiting lab and the challenge of readapting to life with gravity.
"It's great to all be back together," said NASA astronaut Kevin Ford from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Ford, who returned to Earth on March 15 after a five-month mission, joined up with two of his?Expedition 34?crewmates, Canada's Chris Hadfield and NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn, for the live video conference.
Hadfield and Marshburn came home just last week, and they talked about how it was difficult at first to their Earth legs back after spending five months floating. [Chris Hadfield's Most Memorable Moments in Orbit]
"There's this gigantic magnet that's sucking you and every part of your body into the ground," Marshburn said of the feeling he had when he touched down aboard a?Russian Soyuz spacecraft?on May 13.
"When we get to space, your body immediately starts to adapt to weightlessness," Hadfield added. "It starts turning you from an Earthling into a 'spaceling' ? But then when you come home, gravity just feels so unfair."
Sentimental about a sandwich Hadfield's social-media following skyrocketed while he was at the orbiting lab, thanks to his Twitter updates, photos and home movies that included David Bowie covers and cooking lessons. Though Hadfield?once showed how to make a peanut butter and honey sandwich in microgravity, he said a real sandwich was one of the things he savored most upon his return.
"Living on the space station, the food is really good, but there's no way to preserve the texture," Hadfield said. "It's sort of like eating the world's best baby food. It's nothing like a big, messy, crunchy sandwich."
Sandwiches aside, Hadfield takes his online presence seriously.
"I've been trying for 20 years to share the experience that we're trusted with of flying in space," the astronaut said. "This is an enrichment of the overall human experience ? and we now have a way to make it interactive."
The same three astronauts held the first-ever?Google+ Hangout in space?back in February. This time around, Ford, Marshburn and Hadfield all highlighted the astounding range of research?going on in the hundreds of experiments on the space station. Some of the experiments track climate change on Earth, while others are aimed at making discoveries about the makeup of the universe.
The astronauts' own bodies are often testing grounds for experiments. With longer missions to other planets in mind, scientists and mission planners are very interested in knowing about the physiological?effects of space. Hadfield pointed out that data from the space station astronauts could help scientists figure out what it will take for humans to acclimate to the gravity of Mars after spending months in weightless conditions.
International perspective They also discussed the international politics involved in the orbiting lab, as a handful of groups from the Model United Nations were participating in the hangout.
"I don?t think there's any turning back at this point in terms of international cooperation," Ford said. "Future major endeavors like this are going to be international endeavors ? That will be a good legacy for the space station."
Hadfield highlighted the cooperation of the international crew during the?emergency spacewalk?on May 11 to try to fix a leak of ammonia, which cools down the orbiting lab's power systems. "To me it was just a lovely little microcosm of how we all can be when we decide for whatever reasons to work together in a common direction," Hadfield said.
The International Space Station has been permanently staffed with rotating crews since 2000, when the first three-person team took up residence. Construction?of the $100 billion orbiting laboratory began in 1998, with five different space agencies and 15 countries participating in its assembly.
As Hadfield and Marshburn acclimate to life on Earth, another NASA astronaut, Karen Nyberg, is counting down to her May 28 launch. She will head to the orbiting lab with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin next week. They will join NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin as the crew of Expedition 36.

IQ predicted by ability to filter motion
A brief visual task can predict IQ, according to a new study.
This surprisingly simple exercise measures the brain's unconscious ability to filter out visual movement. The study shows that individuals whose brains are better at automatically suppressing background motion perform better on standard measures of intelligence.
The test is the first purely sensory assessment to be strongly correlated with IQ and may provide a non-verbal and culturally unbiased tool for scientists seeking to understand neural processes associated with general intelligence.
"Because intelligence is such a broad construct, you can't really track it back to one part of the brain," says Duje Tadin, a senior author on the study and an assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. "But since this task is so simple and so closely linked to IQ, it may give us clues about what makes a brain more efficient, and, consequently, more intelligent."
The unexpected link between IQ and motion filtering was reported online in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on May 23 by a research team lead by Tadin and Michael Melnick, a doctoral candidate in brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester.
In the study, individuals watched brief video clips of black and white bars moving across a computer screen. Their sole task was to identify which direction the bars drifted: to the right or to the left. The bars were presented in three sizes, with the smallest version restricted to the central circle where human motion perception is known to be optimal, an area roughly the width of the thumb when the hand is extended. Participants also took a standardized intelligence test.
As expected, people with higher IQ scores were faster at catching the movement of the bars when observing the smallest image. The results support prior research showing that individuals with higher IQs make simple perceptual judgments swifter and have faster reflexes. "Being 'quick witted' and 'quick on the draw' generally go hand in hand," says Melnick.
But the tables turned when presented with the larger images. The higher a person's IQ, the slower they were at detecting movement. "From previous research, we expected that all participants would be worse at detecting the movement of large images, but high IQ individuals were much, much worse," says Melnick. That counter-intuitive inability to perceive large moving images is a perceptual marker for the brain's ability to suppress background motion, the authors explain. In most scenarios, background movement is less important than small moving objects in the foreground. Think about driving in a car, walking down a hall, or even just moving your eyes across the room. The background is constantly in motion.
The key discovery in this study is how closely this natural filtering ability is linked to IQ. The first experiment found a 64 percent correlation between motion suppression and IQ scores, a much stronger relationship than other sensory measures to date. For example, research on the relationship between intelligence and color discrimination, sensitivity to pitch, and reaction times have found only a 20 to 40 percent correlation. "In our first experiment, the effect for motion was so strong," recalls Tadin, "that I really thought this was a fluke."
So the group tried to disprove the findings from the initial 12-participant study conducted while Tadin was at Vanderbilt University working with co-author Sohee Park, a professor of psychology. They reran the experiment at the University of Rochester on a new cohort of 53 subjects, administering the full IQ test instead of an abbreviated version and the results were even stronger; correlation rose to 71 percent. The authors also tested for other possible explanations for their findings.
For example, did the surprising link to IQ simply reflect a person's willful decision to focus on small moving images? To rule out the effect of attention, the second round of experiments randomly ordered the different image sizes and tested other types of large images that have been shown not to elicit suppression. High IQ individuals continued to be quicker on all tasks, except the ones that isolated motion suppression. The authors concluded that high IQ is associated with automatic filtering of background motion.
"We know from prior research which parts of the brain are involved in visual suppression of background motion. This new link to intelligence provides a good target for looking at what is different about the neural processing, what's different about the neurochemistry, what's different about the neurotransmitters of people with different IQs," says Tadin.
The relationship between IQ and motion suppression points to the fundamental cognitive processes that underlie intelligence, the authors write. The brain is bombarded by an overwhelming amount of sensory information, and its efficiency is built not only on how quickly our neural networks process these signals, but also on how good they are at suppressing less meaningful information. "Rapid processing is of little utility unless it is restricted to the most relevant information," the authors conclude.
The researchers point out that this vision test could remove some of the limitations associated with standard IQ tests, which have been criticized for cultural bias. "Because the test is simple and non-verbal, it will also help researchers better understand neural processing in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities," says co-author Loisa Bennetto, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Rochester.
