Fomenko: Football Federation of Ukraine has no concrete candidates for post of Ukraine coach

The Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) has no concrete candidates for the post of Ukraine manager after English coach Harry Redknapp turned down the job of coach of the national football team.

"We're continuing to look for candidates who are worthy of this post. There are currently no concrete names," Chairman of the FFU's Committee for National Teams and Head of the Coaching Council Mykhailo Fomenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Monday.

Earlier reports said that the FFU was in talks with Italian manager Marcello Lippi, who led Italy to victory in the 2006 World Cup.

As reported, on November 20, the FFU's presidium decided to begin talks with English manager Redknapp regarding his possible job as Ukraine coach. On November 24, Redknapp signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with England's Queens Park Rangers.

On November 19, Ukrainian football star Andriy Shevchenko turned down FFU President Anatoliy Konkov's offer to take charge of Ukraine's national football team.

The post of the head coach of the Ukrainian national football team became vacant after Oleh Blokhin took charge of FC Dynamo Kyiv in late September 2012.

Video: Gregory: Lots of ?huffing and puffing? on fiscal cliff

>> david gregory is, of course, moderator of "meet the press."

>> willie, good morning.

>> if you're looking for reason that a deal would get done. yesterday was not your day. by most accounts treasury secretary tim geithner laughed off capitol hill by senator minority leader mitch mcconnell and john boehner saying the white house offer is not serious. is this a breakdown in the negotiation or the first step in what will be a month of negotiation?

>> i think the worst thing to watch on capitol hill is the actual progress of these negotiations because there's going to be a lot of huffing and puffing on both sides, a lot of political posturing, the white house certainly feels that the president is in a very strong position to play the high card in terms of tax increases. that's what he wants. that's what the american people said they wanted. you look at the exit polls . the president feels that confidence. on the other side republicans feel like they have enough room here to still push very hard against tax increases being too large, but we're still a long ways away from what would be a final deal, and the brinksmanship on both sides is both dangerous but also necessary as both sides try to get these numbers a little closer to what their folks will accept.

>> david, meanwhile, while all this is going on yesterday, the president is hosting mitt romney for lunch at the white house , the first time the two have seen each other since the last presidential debate. can you give us any insight beyond the fact we know now they had turkey chili for lunch, what actually went on in the room?

>> i was up here in boston and spoke to some romney advisers who did describe it as a good meeting, an important meeting for both sides to do. this is an awkward looking photo. still very tough. the feelings, if you're on the romney side from this pain, are still pretty raw. one of the things i was told that romney made clear is that he doesn't want to play any part in the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was some talk immediately afterwards, some of his discussions or some of his ideas on deductions, eliminating some of those tax deductions could be helpful, but romney made it clear he doesn't want to play a role in those talks.

>> david, who will you be with this weekend on "meet the press?"

>> we'll be talking to treasury secretary tim geithner about where the discussions are, where the pain point is for democrats in terms of where they are willing to make cuts. that's an important question for republicans as the discussions go forward.

>> one of the men in the center of all of this. david gregory , thanks very

Crock Pot Chicken, Rice and Green Chile Casserole

Chances are you?re tired of cooking.

Soooooooo I?ve decided to give you a break before I talk about Christmas cookies for the next 29 days. I?m so excited that I can hardly stand it. I LOVE Christmas and all the baking that goes along with it with all of my heart and soul. But first! A break. A well deserved-bust-out-the-crock-pot-and-put-your-feet-up kinda break. I love this simple comforting casserole recipe. It?s comfort food, pure and simple, and the perfect dinner when you round it out with a big green salad and a glass of wine. It?s also one of those absolutely delicious recipes that doesn?t photograph so hot, so please bear with me. It?s worth it ? I promise.

All you need are some chicken breasts, green chilies, an onion, bell pepper, cream of chicken soup, cheddar cheese and rice. It?s delightfully retro in the best way possible and reheats even better the next day.

If you?re thinking that this looks like something your mom or grandma made, you?re probably right. It?s a slow cooker variation on the traditional chicken and rice casserole, which has nursed thousands through breakups, hard times, pms, migraine headaches and taxes.

Unfortunately my photos make it resemble dog food and do no justice to the amazingly comforting cheesy taste. Guess that means you?ll have to make it yourself! It?s cyber monday ? go ahead and buy yourself that Crock Pot you?ve been lusting after. Here?s one that closely resembles mine. Best $20 I?ve ever spent.

Happy {cyber} Monday! How was your Thanksgiving??

Israelis question too, 'Who wants this war?'

Residents of southern Israel only reluctantly express support for a potential expansion of the conflict in Gaza and express sympathy for the suffering on the other side of the border.

Just days after Adi Pito married a woman from the town of Kiryat Malachi, he heard that a rocket from Gaza had struck an apartment building there, killing three residents.

?I was worried about my wife,? says Mr. Pito, who was in a nearby city at the time. ?If you ask me, I think we have to destroy Gaza. I think they are animals, not people,? he says, pulling at his new wedding ring as he stood outside the damaged apartment yesterday. ?It?s the right thing to do.?

But in towns across southern Israel that have been hit by rockets, other residents only reluctantly express support for a potential expansion of Israel?s Pillar of Defense operation and express sympathy for the suffering on the other side of the border, where at least 53 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured since the operation began five days ago.

?When people say, ?Let?s kill them,? I don?t think they really mean to do it,? says Yehudit Bar Hay, a trauma expert at the Israel Center for Victims of Terror and War, known as NATAL. ?It is an angry feeling but ? we don?t want to kill the people of Gaza. We see the mothers and the children, we are sorry for them.?

Even those who are ?very, very injured? from the trauma of living under rocket fire say they don?t want to hurt anybody, adds Ms. Bar Hay, who lives less than a mile from the Gaza border.?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that Israel?s military ?is prepared for a significant expansion of its operations,? even as at least 16,000 reservists have been called up for a potential ground invasion. The Defense Ministry has authorized the calling up of as many as 75,000 reservists ? more than six times as many as participated in the 2008-09 Gaza war.

But while some Israelis say war is necessary or inevitable, few are happy about it.?

?Who wants this war? Nobody in Israel,? says Ashdod resident Bebert Avitan, his pink-rimmed glasses hanging from his neck.

Part of the reason for a lack of public pressure may be the effectiveness of Israel?s Iron Dome system, which has kept casualties very low despite a barrage of rockets from Gaza. See today's Monitor story on the Iron Dome system.?

?Hamas apparently has much greater capability than it had in the last war on Gaza,? says Golan Galia, a political scientist at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, but notes that there hasn?t been a parallel uptick in Israeli casualties. ?Because Iron Dome has been relatively successful, there has been less pressure on the government or within the government to launch a ground attack.?

Only three Israelis, all from one building in Kiryat Malachi, have been killed in the recent escalation.

As the evening news shows a picture of a bombed out building, lifelong resident Masodi Sugaker says, ?It?s so sad to see this. To [have to] make everything new after this? Why? Because of Hamas.?

?Hamas exploits their own people, the Palestinians,? says she adds.

Her sister, Hanna Shukrun, adds, ?We don?t want [war],? because there are kids [in Gaza].

But she says, ?Israel can?t just sit here and do nothing?. Our army doesn?t need to wait until they have many weapons.?

Breakthrough selectively represses immune system: New hope for multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, food allergies, and asthma

ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2012) ? In a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health have developed innovative technology to selectively inhibit the part of the immune system responsible for attacking myelin -- the insulating material that encases nerve fibers and facilitates electrical communication between brain cells.

Autoimmune disorders occur when T-cells -- a type of white blood cell within the immune system -- mistake the body's own tissues for a foreign substance and attack them. Current treatment for autoimmune disorders involves the use of immunosuppressant drugs which tamp down the overall activity of the immune system. However, these medications leave patients susceptible to infections and increase their risk of cancer as the immune system's normal ability to identify and destroy aberrant cells within the body is compromised.

Supported by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) at NIH, Drs. Stephen Miller and Lonnie Shea at Northwestern University, Evanston, teamed up with researchers at the University of Sydney, and the Myelin Repair Foundation in Saratoga, Calif. to come up with a novel way of repressing only the part of the immune system that causes autoimmune disorders while leaving the rest of the system intact.

The new research takes advantage of a natural safeguard employed by the body to prevent autoreactive T-cells -- which recognize and have the potential to attack the body's healthy tissues -- from becoming active. They report their results in the Nov. 18 online edition of Nature Biotechnology.

"We're trying to do something that interfaces with the natural processes in the body," said Shea. "The body has natural mechanisms for shutting down an immune response that is inappropriate, and we're really just looking to tap into that."

One of these natural mechanisms involves the ongoing clearance of apoptotic, or dying, cells from the body. When a cell dies, it releases chemicals that attract specific cells of the immune system called macrophages. These macrophages gobble up the dying cell and deliver it to the spleen where it presents self-antigens -- tiny portions of proteins from the dying cell -- to a pool of T-cells. In order to prevent autoreactive T-cells from being activated, macrophages initiate the repression of any T-cells capable of binding to the self-antigens.

Dr. Miller was the first to demonstrate that by coupling a specific self-antigen such as myelin to apoptotic cells, one could tap into this natural mechanism to suppress T-cells that would normally attack the myelin. The lab spent decades demonstrating that they could generate antigen-specific immune suppression in various animal models of autoimmune diseases. Recently, they initiated a preliminary clinical trial with collaborators in Germany to test the safety of injecting the antigen-bound apoptotic cells into patients with MS. While the trial successfully demonstrated that the injections were safe, it also highlighted a key problem with using cells as a vehicle for antigen delivery:

"Cellular therapy is extremely expensive as it needs to be carried out in a large medical center that has the capability to isolate patient's white blood cells under sterile conditions and to re-infuse those antigen-coupled cells back into the patients," said Miller. "It's a costly, difficult, and time-consuming procedure."

Thus began a collaboration with Dr. Shea, a bioengineer at Northwestern University, to discuss the possibility of developing a surrogate for the apoptotic cells. After trying out various formulations, his lab successfully linked the desired antigens to microscopic, biodegradable particles which they predicted would be taken up by circulating macrophages similar to apoptotic cells.

Much to their amazement, when tested by the Miller lab, the antigen-bound particles were just as good, if not better, at inducing T-cell tolerance in animal models of autoimmune disorders.

Using their myelin-bound particles, the researchers were able to both prevent the initiation of MS in their mouse model as well as inhibit its progression when injected immediately following the first sign of clinical symptoms.

The research team is now hoping to begin phase I clinical trials using this new technology. The material that makes up the particles has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is currently used in resorbable sutures as well as in clinical trials to deliver anti-cancer agents. Miller believes that the proven safety record of these particles along with their ability to be easily produced using good manufacturing practices will make it easier to translate their discovery into clinical use.

"I think we've come up with a very potent way to induce tolerance that can be easily translated into clinical practice. We're doing everything we can now to take this forward," said Miller.

In addition to its potential use for the treatment of MS, the researchers have shown in the lab that their therapy can induce tolerance for other autoimmune diseases such as type I diabetes and specific food allergies. They also speculate that transplant patients could benefit from the treatment which has the potential to retract the body's natural immune response against a transplanted organ. Dr. Christine Kelley, NIBIB director of the Division of Science and Technology, points to the unique collaboration between scientists and engineers that made this advance a reality.

"This discovery is testimony to the importance of multidisciplinary research efforts in healthcare," said Kelley. "The combined expertise of these immunology and bioengineering researchers has resulted in a valuable new perspective on treating autoimmune disorders."

The Internet and the civil war

See also: Free speech in the media during the 2011 Libyan civil war

In 2006 Reporters Without Borders (RWB) removed Libya from their list of Internet enemies after a fact-finding visit found no evidence of Internet censorship. The OpenNet Initiative?s 2007?2008 technical test results contradicted that conclusion, however. In 2009 ONI classified Internet filtering in Libya as selective in the political area and as no evidence in social, conflict/security, and Internet tools.

Prior to the civil war, Internet filtering under the Gaddafi regime had become more selective, focusing on a few political opposition Web sites. This relatively lenient filtering policy coincided with what was arguably a trend toward greater openness and increasing freedom of the press. However, the legal and political climate continued to encourage self-censorship in online media.

On 18 February 2011, the day after the first protests that were to lead to the 2011 Libyan civil war, Libya appeared to have withdrawn all of its BGP prefix announcements from the Internet for a short period, cutting it off from the rest of the global Internet. The prefix were re-advertised six hours later.

There was no traffic for several hours on 19 and 20 February. Service picked up over the next few days to almost normal levels until, at 6:00am on 3 March, traffic effectively ceased (except for very limited satellite links). The government had severed the underwater backbone fibre-optic cable that runs along the coast, linking networks in the east and servers in the west of the country. Engineers reckon the break is between the cities of Misrata and Khoms, and may be a physical or electronic rupture.

From 10 July traffic began increasing again, and after a brief shutdown on 15 July, it was reaching about 15% of its pre-17 February levels up to 22 August, the day Tripoli fell to the rebels. Traffic began increasing again at that point, and as of 2 September was reaching daily levels in excess of 50% and often as high as 75% of pre-war levels.

The overthrow of the Gaddafi regime in the fall of 2011 ended an era of censorship. In 2012 RWB removed Libya from its list of countries under surveillance.

17 Civilians, 2 Isaf Troops Killed in IED Blasts

At least 17 civilians from the one wedding party and two Isaf soldiers were killed in two separate bomb blasts from improvised explosive devices (IED) on Friday, officials said.

The 17 civilians were travelling together in a minibus as part of a wedding party when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb blast in western Farah province on Friday afternoon, provincial spokesman Abdul Rahman Zhandou said.

Four other civilians were injured in the blast and most of the victims were women and children, he said.

The incident took place in Pusht Rood district of the province.

"These were innocent people including women and children who were killed in the blast," he said.

No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the bomb.

More than 20 civilians have been killed by the roadside bomb blasts in Afghanistan in the past week.

On the same day two Isaf soldiers were killed in the blast from an IED in eastern Afghanistan, Isaf said.

"Two International Security Assistance Force service members died following an improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan today," Isaf said in a statement on Friday.

The statement did not provide more details about the exact location of the incident or nationality of the soldiers.

Friday's death brings to 382 the number of Isaf troops killed in Afghanistan this year - 290 US troops, 44 British and 48 soldiers from other nations. Fifteen have died this month.

Around 66,000 US troops and 37,000 troops of other nations are fighting insurgents in Afghanistan.

New Malware Variant Uses Google Docs As a Proxy To Phone Home

An anonymous reader writes "Windows 8 may block most malware out of the box, but there is still malware out there that thwarts Microsoft's latest and greatest. A new Trojan variant, detected as Backdoor.Makadocs and spread via RTF and Microsoft Word document marked as Trojan.Dropper, has been discovered that not only adds a clause to target Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, but also uses Google Docs as a proxy server to phone home to its Command & Control (C&C) server."

Phoenix Sinclair inquiry resumes with plea from commissioner to ...

Phoenix Sinclair
The inquiry into the death of five-year-old Phoenix Sinclair resumed on Wednesday. (File photo)

Report an error

The long-awaited resumption of a public inquiry Wednesday into potential connections between Manitoba?s child-welfare system and the horrific death of a little girl at her caregivers? hands kicked off with a plea from the man charged with leading it.

?We must be mindful of why we are here,? Phoenix Sinclair inquiry commissioner Ted Hughes warned prior to the start of witness testimony after a delay of more than two months prompted by a court challenge over his decision-making powers.

?A little five-year-old girl who suffered a tragic death, received or whose family received, during her lifetime child welfare services,? Hughes continued. ?Let no one lose sight of the fact that that is why we are here ? the centrepiece of our work, as a lasting memorial to the short life of little Phoenix Sinclair, is the protection of all children, particularly the most vulnerable of them throughout this province.?

The inquiry continues to probe the circumstances of Phoenix?s first apprehension by the now-defunct Winnipeg Child and Family Services agency starting April 24, 2000, just after the girl?s birth.

A key focus of Wednesday?s hearings was on the girl?s biological mother, Samantha Kematch, who as a child was herself had a troubled history with CFS and had already had another child apprehended prior to becoming pregnant with Phoenix.

She appeared ?ambivalent? at the prospect of parenting the little girl when she arrived, the inquiry has heard.

Kematch and her former boyfriend, Karl McKay, are currently serving life prison terms after being convicted in 2008 of first-degree murder for Phoenix?s 2005 killing at a home on Fisher River First Nation. Phoenix was abused and confined in the home?s basement. Her body was buried in a shallow grave on the reserve and not discovered for months after she died.

In May 2000, she and Phoenix?s father Steve Sinclair consented to keep Phoenix in CFS care for three months as they followed a seven-step plan in hopes of eventually being able to parent her.

Part of the plan included provisions that Kematch undergo a psychological assessment and she and Sinclair attend parenting classes, which she did.

Supervising social worker Andrew Orobko said the hope was if the parents followed through and showed ?parental capacity, parental motivation,? they would be able to regain custody.

There was nothing remarkable about Phoenix?s case at the time, Orobko said. It was like many other cases he and his six harried social workers handled in Winnipeg?s North End ? cases often weighted down by the baggage of terrible social conditions and dysfunction.

?It was very typical of the work we did on a daily basis in the north of Winnipeg,? Orobko said.

Social worker Kerri-Lynn Greeley authored a report on the case in October 2000 before handing off her file to another worker. She testified CFS didn?t require Kematch and Sinclair to undergo a full parental assessment with a psychologist.

?I can?t remember why we didn?t consider (it),? she said.

Greeley?s evidence continues Thursday. Phoenix was reunited with Kematch in September 2000.

Hughes said the inquiry now expects to hear its final witness by May 31, 2013. He planned to ask the province to allow him to produce his report and recommendations by Sept. 30.

Reporter James Turner is live-blogging the Phoenix Sinclair inquiry.

Bernanke's successor could have hands tied

15 hrs.

President Barack Obama's next choice to head the U.S. Federal Reserve could have his or her hands tied if Ben Bernanke and company continue to re-write the policymaking rule book at their current clip.

Under Chairman Bernanke, who is expected to step down when his current term expires in January 2014, the U.S. central bank has embraced the goal of making the historically shrouded business of setting monetary policy far more transparent.

It has adopted a string of new rules and guidelines to clarify its policy intentions, including an inflation target and a conditional vow to hold interest rates near zero until at least mid-2015.

The next step is being hotly debated now.

Fed policymakers are striving to agree on a set of economic variables, or thresholds -- probably particular levels of unemployment and inflation -- that would signal when the time to raise interest rates was finally drawing near.

The trick is making a credible commitment that convinces investors to keep longer-term borrowing costs low, thus stimulating the economy, while at the same time ensuring the Fed can react swiftly to changing economic realities.

The concern is that these rules and guidelines will crimp the central bank's flexibility in years to come as it deals with the fits and starts of a protracted U.S. economic recovery.

"The more they do it over the next year, the more the next chair will be constrained," said Vincent Reinhart, chief U.S. economist at Morgan Stanley and a former Fed economist. The "constructive ambiguity" the central bank has famously used over the years to safeguard its policy-setting discretion is slowly disappearing, he said.

Preserving policy credibility
In battling the worst recession in decades, central banks around the world have deployed untested tools, such as large-scale bond purchases. They have also often made commitments about how, and for how long, they plan to use the tools.

Their decisions will matter for years to come.

After eight grueling years battling a severe financial crisis, the deepest recession since the Great Depression and a disappointing recovery, Fed watchers say Bernanke will likely want to step down when his second term as Fed chief expires, even if Obama wants him to stay.

But the economy is unlikely to have fully recovered by then, leaving any rate-hike cycle to his successor. Fed Vice Chair Janet Yellen and Lawrence Summers, a former White House economic adviser, are both considered possible top candidates for the job.

Whomever Obama nominates will be handed a rule book from the Bernanke era that will be difficult, and maybe unwise, to erase.

Though the guidelines adopted under Bernanke are not iron-clad law, "the credibility of policy actions would be at stake if they were easily overturned," said Peter Hooper, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank Securities.

Age of improv
If Fed officials can reach agreement, economic thresholds would replace their stated expectation that interest rates would remain near zero through at least mid-2015.

It would be the latest refinement to the Fed's communications toolkit. In the last 16 months alone, it moved to tie low interest rates to calendar dates, adopted a formal inflation target of 2 percent, and published the policy expectations of each of its 19 policymakers. It built on that list in September when it said it expected to buy bonds until the labor market outlook improved "substantially."

Within the Fed's policy-making committee, however, consensus on which unemployment or inflation levels to use has proven elusive. Four top Fed officials have gone public with their own proposals, whether simply to provide a window into their tough internal debate or to sway their colleagues.

"It would be nice if we could communicate more clearly what those parameters are," William Dudley, the influential president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, said last month.

"The problem of course is that it's very hard to summarize the economy, and how you're going to feel about the economy, through just one or two parameters," said Dudley, who has not pitched a plan.

Yellen -- who as chair would likely smooth the transition from Bernanke -- could shed more light on the issue on Tuesday when she gives a speech on central bank communications.

To be sure, Bernanke's Fed has been careful to leave itself some breathing space. The current round of bond purchases is "open-ended," meaning there is no dollar value or timeline constraining it.

Still, the drum beat of rule changes continues.

The Fed is also considering adopting a "consensus forecast" to give investors a better sense of how policy is likely to evolve. That would build on a January decision to publish for the first time individual policymakers' rates forecasts.

As Bernanke's term draws to a close, the jury is still out on the effectiveness of the new transparency steps.

"It is the improvisation stage," Reinhart said, "and it does feel unsatisfying."

Water Pollution Becomes The Most Problem In Environment : News ...

You are here: Home / Environmental / Water Pollution Becomes The Most Problem In Environment

Water pollution is a major problem in the United States. All over the world, water pollution is increasingly becoming a major public health concern as statistics shows rising level of pollution in major waterways. Since sustenance of life on earth depends on water, water pollution is a major threat to life on earth. As more waterways become polluted, the amount of clean water available for domestic use is decreasing at an alarming rate.

Wastewater and its nutrient content can be used extensively for irrigation and other ecosystem services. Its reuse can deliver positive benefits to the farming community, society, and municipalities. However, wastewater reuse also exacts negative externality effects on humans and ecological systems, which need to be identified and assessed. Before one can endorse wastewater irrigation as a means of increasing water supply for agriculture, a thorough analysis must be undertaken from an economic perspective as well. Lead is one of the common and dangerous water pollutants. Lead pollution is made worse by the fact that it may be difficult to monitor as the sources cannot be easily detected. It cannot be detected unless complex laboratory testing is carried out, since it cannot be smelt or tasted.

Hence water is the prime source of livelihood for all living creatures; it is our responsibility to tackle to the issues related to complex sources of pollution which can be either in form of Industrial waste, sewage waste or agriculture run off. Perhaps there are many water pollution prevention techniques and more good technologies are developing for that which can be catered for reducing the level of pollution. Still there is much to be done over this issue, but at least we can start with small initiative. New music review: Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da, Madness (eOne Music)

Seemingly divided between regret and optimism, the songs on the 10th Madness album make up a satisfying, if not earth-shattering set. As usual, the best of the band?s slice-of-life narratives recall Ray Davies, but the less memorable ones are hard to keep in focus.

With the exception of Death of a Rude Boy, the ska grooves that first brought the band into the public eye are largely absent. To judge from this thoroughly British album, with its quirky arrangements, understated wit and uncommercial production values, their second act as an amiable pop act is still ongoing. Typically, though, there are no tracks here you can see troubling the American charts ? which is nothing new, given that their 1982 single Our House pretty much remains their only hit on this side of the Atlantic.

But for those who relate to insecurity more than bravado, underdog asides like the wistful Never Knew Your Name, the winningly silly rocker My Girl 2 and the quite beautiful Small World will provide a bittersweet soundtrack to the approaching winter.

Rating: *** and 1/2

Podworthy: Small World

Why Antarctic sea ice cover has increased under the effects of climate change

ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2012) ? The first direct evidence that marked changes to Antarctic sea ice drift have occurred over the last 20 years, in response to changing winds, is published this week in the journal Nature Geoscience. Scientists from NERC's British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena California explain why, unlike the dramatic losses reported in the Arctic, the Antarctic sea ice cover has increased under the effects of climate change.

Maps created by JPL using over 5 million individual daily ice motion measurements captured over a period of 19 years by four US Defense Meteorological satellites show, for the first time, the long-term changes in sea ice drift around Antarctica.

Lead author, Dr Paul Holland of BAS says: "Until now these changes in ice drift were only speculated upon, using computer models of Antarctic winds. This study of direct satellite observations shows the complexity of climate change. The total Antarctic sea-ice cover is increasing slowly, but individual regions are actually experiencing much larger gains and losses that are almost offsetting each other overall. We now know that these regional changes are caused by changes in the winds, which in turn affect the ice cover through changes in both ice drift and air temperature. The changes in ice drift also suggest large changes in the ocean surrounding Antarctica, which is very sensitive to the cold and salty water produced by sea-ice growth.

"Sea ice is constantly on the move; around Antarctica the ice is blown away from the continent by strong northward winds. Since 1992 this ice drift has changed. In some areas the export of ice away from Antarctica has doubled, while in others it has decreased significantly."

Sea ice plays a key role in the global environment -- reflecting heat from the sun and providing a habitat for marine life. At both poles sea ice cover is at its minimum during late summer. However, during the winter freeze in Antarctica this ice cover expands to an area roughly twice the size of Europe. Ranging in thickness from less than a metre to several metres, the ice insulates the warm ocean from the frigid atmosphere above.

The new research also helps explain why observed changes in the amount of sea-ice cover are so different in the two Polar Regions. The Arctic has experienced dramatic ice losses in recent decades while the overall ice extent in the Antarctic has increased slightly. However, this small Antarctic increase is actually the result of much larger regional increases and decreases, which are now shown to be caused by wind-driven changes. In places, increased northward winds have caused the sea-ice cover to expand outwards from Antarctica. The Arctic Ocean is surrounded by land, so changed winds cannot cause Arctic ice to expand in the same way.

Dr Ron Kwok, JPL says, "The Antarctic sea ice cover interacts with the global climate system very differently than that of the Arctic, and these results highlight the sensitivity of the Antarctic ice coverage to changes in the strength of the winds around the continent."

There has been contrasting climate change observed across the Antarctic in recent decades. The Antarctic Peninsula has warmed as much as anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere, while East Antarctica has shown little change or even a small cooling around the coast. The new research improves understanding of present and future climate change. It is important to distinguish between the Antarctic Ice Sheet -- glacial ice -- which is losing volume, and Antarctic sea ice -- frozen seawater -- which is expanding.

This research was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Deadly blast devastates Indianapolis neighborhood

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Splintered beams and boards on a piece of charred earth were all that remained Sunday where at least two Indianapolis homes were leveled in a blast that killed two people and rendered homes for blocks uninhabitable.

A backhoe raked through the rubble in the middle-class subdivision as clusters of firefighters and rescue workers weary from a long, chaotic day that began late the night before waited for their next assignment.

The two-story, brick-faced homes on either side of those demolished by the blast were ruins. One home's roof was gone, a blackened husk left behind. On the other side of the gap, the side of a home was sheared off. Across the street, garage doors had buckled from the heat.

It wasn't yet clear what caused the blast that shook the neighborhood at 11 p.m. Saturday. Residents described hearing a loud boom that blew out windows and collapsed ceilings. Some thought a plane had crashed or that it was an earthquake.

Alex Pflanzer, who was asleep when the nearby homes were leveled, said he heard his wife screaming and thought someone was breaking in his house. Grabbing his gun, he checked the house and saw the front door was standing open.

"I walked outside and all the houses were on fire," he said.

Pflanzer, his wife and two dogs were staying in a hotel room Sunday night. They were, however, without their cat, who refused to budge from the crawl space.

Deputy Code Enforcement Director Adam Collins said as many as 31 homes were damaged so badly that they may have to be demolished. The explosion damaged a total of 80 homes, he said. He estimated the damage at $3.6 million.

Some residents were allowed to return to their homes to retrieve a few belongings Sunday under police escort, officials said. Others whose homes weren't as badly damaged were allowed to go home, but officials said they would have to do without electricity overnight.

Officials did not identify the two people who were killed. However, a candlelight vigil was held at Greenwood's Southwest Elementary School on Sunday night for second-grade teacher Jennifer Longworth. She and her husband, John Dion Longworth, lived at a home destroyed in the blast. WTHR-TV reported that friends, family and colleagues of the teacher gathered at the school.

Deputy Fire Chief Kenny Bacon told reporters Sunday investigators haven't eliminated any possible causes for the blast. But U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, who represents the area, said he had been told a bomb or meth lab explosion had been ruled out.

Bacon said the crisis could have been much worse. "I know we're very fortunate that some of the people weren't home," he said.

Bryan and Trina McClellan were at home with their 23-year-old son, Eric, when the shock wave from the blast a block away shook their home. It knocked out the windows along one side of their house, and their first instinct was to check on their grandchildren, two toddlers who were in the basement. One held his ears and said, "Loud noise, loud noise."

Eric McClellan said he ran to the scene of the explosion and saw homes flat or nearly so.

"Somebody was trapped inside one of the houses, and the firefighters were trying to get to him. I don't know if he survived," he said, adding that firefighters ordered him to leave the area.

Once the flames were out, firefighters went through what was left of the neighborhood, one home at a time, in case people had been left behind, Fire Lt. Bonnie Hensley said. They used search lights until dawn as they peered into the ruined buildings.

Along with the two people killed, seven people were taken to a hospital with injuries, Bacon said. Everyone else was accounted for, he said.

Four of the seven who were injured had minor injuries, fire officials said.

Dan Considine, a spokesman for Citizens Energy, said the utility had not received any calls from people smelling natural gas in that area.

"Most of the time, when there's a gas leak, people smell it," he said. "But not always."

Carson said officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the federal Department of Transportation, which have oversight over pipelines, were also sending investigators.

Dan Able, a 58-year-old state employee who lives across the street from the two homes that exploded, said his first thought was that a plane had hit his house.

The blast was "a sound I've never heard before, it was so loud," he said. His windows blew out and a bedroom ceiling collapsed on his wife, Jan. He pulled her out, and they went outside.

"Both houses across the street were on fire, basically, just rubble on fire," he said.

The Ables and about 200 other people evacuated from the neighborhood were taken to a nearby school. Some who had been sleeping arrived in their pajamas with pets they scooped up as they fled. Others had to leave their animals behind, and police said later in the day that they were trying to round up those wandering through the area and find their owners.

Most evacuees eventually left the school to stay with relatives, friends or at hotels.

The relief operation was later moved to a church just a few blocks away, where residents could find supplies including blankets, shoes, diapers, canned goods and even a teddy bear.

Elon Musk Explains Why SpaceX Doesn't Patent ... - Business Insider

The patent system has been getting a lot of heat lately, especially with the high-profile fight between Apple and Samsung.

Superhero entrepreneur Elon Musk just avoids patents altogether with his high-tech space venture SpaceX.?

You would think you'd want to protect your intellectual property when you're building complicated things like spaceships and innovating new technologies daily.

But Musk's decision actually makes total sense.?Why is that? Musk explains in a recent interview with Chris Anderson at Wired:

"We have essentially no patents in SpaceX. Our primary long-term competition is in China," said Musk in the interview. "If we published patents, it would be farcical, because the Chinese would just use them as a recipe book."

There are plenty of big holes in patent law ? especially international patent law. And in some cases, they're totally bypassed anyway.

Thus, Musk's only option is to go with the trade secret route. That should end up working for a company like SpaceX, but as patent fights ramp up, something has to be done.
