Automaker GM now hiring ? IT workers

By Joseph Szczesny, The Detroit Bureau

Despite widespread skepticism, General Motors Co. appears serious about in-sourcing the major slice of its information technology business ? including the development of advanced in-car infotainment systems.

The maker plans to open a new Information Technology Innovation Center in Warren, Mich., and expects to hire up to 1,500 high-tech employees over the next several years to support the company?s expanding focus on IT services.

The maker also plans to add 500 more jobs at another center in Austin, Texas.

?We?re currently seeking the next generation of game-changers to help us usher in a new age of automotive innovation at GM,? said GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott.

The IT Innovation Centers will play a critical role in GM?s overall IT business strategy. The maker is looking to create and deliver IT services with new capabilities that will help the company improve its performance, drive down the cost of ongoing operations and increase the level of innovation delivered to GM customers. ?Like rivals ranging from Ford to Toyota to BMW, the U.S. giant is well aware of consumer demands for more advanced infotainment technology, as well as smartphone apps that can be used to do such things as control the charging of battery cars like the Chevrolet Volt.

To support this approach, GM is moving to a more in-sourced IT business services model as part of its overall IT Transformation, Mott said. GM moved to an outsourcing strategy nearly 30 years with the acquisition of Ross Perot?s Electronic Data Systems or EDS.

GM set up EDS as a separate subsidiary and turned over virtually all IT work to the Texas-based company. GM eventually spun off EDS, which was ultimately acquired by Silicon Valley-based Hewlett-Packard. ?HP is a prime GM subcontractor but dissatisfaction with its service appears to have been one of the principal reasons for the new move to insource IT work.

The GM Michigan Innovation Center is actually the second of four planned Innovation Centers in the United States. GM last month announced plans for a first facility in Austin, Texas, where 500 new IT jobs also will be created as part of this latest focus on doing IT work in-house. Austin is home to such tech giants as Dell Computer and, along with Silicon Valley, a major center of high-tech R&D.

?GM is executing an IT best practice by in-sourcing IT services and making them a strategic part of assuring GM remains a fast-moving leader,? said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif. ?This is also one of the best opportunities for IT professionals to work in the automotive industry.?

Available positions include software development, project management, database management and business analysis. GM is recruiting recent college graduates and experienced professionals for these jobs.

GM recruiters are visiting U.S. college campuses this fall and participating in local job fairs targeting IT professionals. For more information and to apply for one of these positions, potential job candidates should visit http://www.careers.gm.com/itjobs. However, GM also expects to hire more experienced IT professionals as it builds the staffs of the innovation centers, GM officials said.

(AP) ? Jaime Garcia homered off Bronson Arroyo and pitched into the seventh inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals clinch at least a tie for the second NL wild card and spoil Dusty Baker's return from a mini-stroke with a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

The defending World Series champions have won 11 of 14 and led the Los Angeles Dodgers, playing at home later against San Francisco, by 2? games. The Cardinals have two games to go, the Dodgers three.

A loss by the Dodgers or another Cardinals win would wrap up a playoff spot for St. Louis and a visit to Atlanta for the wild-card game Friday.

Arroyo (12-10) threw 73 pitches while allowing three runs over five innings in a tuneup for the postseason. He topped 200 innings for the seventh time but is 0-3 in his last four starts.

The Reds are 96-64, tied with the Nationals for the best record in the National League with two games to go, and must finish ahead of Washington to get home-field advantage throughout the postseason after losing the season series.

Before the game, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was wary and noncommittal about whether the team would stick around and watch the end of the Giants-Dodgers game that could ignite a delayed celebration in an empty stadium.

"I'm not going there yet," Matheny said. "We've got to win, and I told you guys this before: It's not some sort of trickery going on, except with my own mind and with these guys, too.

"It's true, you have to just kind of play it out and don't get too far ahead of yourself."

Baker missed 11 games, including the NL Central clincher and Homer Bailey's no-hitter, while recovering from a stroke in a Chicago hospital that he had while being treated for an irregular heartbeat.

Garcia (7-7) made it 5 for 5 at the plate against Arroyo when he led off the third with a drive that just cleared the right-field wall for his second career homer, although the perfect run ended when he flied out to right to end the fourth.

Garcia gave up six hits, including three singles in a span of four at-bats in the third, with Brandon Phillips getting an RBI. Scott Rolen doubled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Ryan Hanigan's sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The lefty has been a major asset at home throughout his career, going 20-11 with a 2.48 ERA at Busch Stadium, the lowest career mark of any pitcher with 10 or more starts, including 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA in nine starts this year. He's 3-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 11 road starts this year and 14-12 with a 4.47 ERA overall.

Allen Craig and Yadier Molina added an RBI apiece in a three-run third, and Daniel Descalso had an RBI triple in the sixth that made it 4-1. Jason Motte worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his 41st save in 48 chances.

NOTES: Arroyo has allowed 26 homers, tied for third-most in the NL with Bailey and fellow Reds pitcher Mike Leake. ... Ryan Ludwick returned to the Cincinnati lineup after missing eight games with left groin tightness but was removed in a double switch in the sixth. ... Reds pitchers combined for seven strikeouts to set a franchise record with 1,231, breaking the mark of 1,227 in 2008. ... Motte has all of the Cardinals' saves. The franchise has never gone a season with just one pitcher getting all of the saves.

25% of Americans Were Victims of Security Breaches in Past Year

One in four consumers in the United States had personal identification lost or stolen due to a data breach in the past year, a new study suggests.

Twenty-five percent of Americans have received a notification by a business, online service provider or organization that personal information such as passwords or credit card numbers were subject to a data breach, according to the study conducted by National Cyber Security Alliance and security firm McAfee for National Cyber Security Awareness month.

The news comes as various companies from LinkedIn, eHarmony, Internet radio platform Last.fm and Dropbox have had data compromised in recent months.

With this in mind, about 90% of Americans said they do not feel completely safe from hackers, viruses and malware on the Internet. Consumers feel far more secure on smartphones ? in fact, about 63% said they believe their mobile devices are protected against hackers. But since 57% said they never back up their devices by storing information or data elsewhere and 63% don?t use security software or apps to protect against viruses or malware, there is a disconnect on feeling secure and being secure, McAfee said.

?Similar to keeping ourselves healthy, Americans are aware that they need safe and secure Internet-connected devices, but they aren?t keeping up with the required actions to stay safe online,? the company said on its blog.

Price Gets 20th Win as Rays Beat White Sox 6-2 ? CBS Tampa

CHICAGO (AP) ? Manager Joe Maddon and the Tampa Rays have been down this road before. Almost out of the race for a playoff spot, yet fighting to the end.

That approach worked a year ago when the Rays staged a stunning final-game rally to beat the Yankees and win the AL wild card. Now, after downing the fading White Sox on Sunday with David Price getting his 20th win, the Rays still have a chance to make the postseason.

?It?s always about maintaining a slight mathematical chance. We were in the same boat last year. It could become a little bit better with some cooperation, but either way we just have to go home and play our game,? Maddon said Sunday after his team?s 6-2 victory.

Tampa Bay has played its best ball at the right time, winning 10 of 11 to stay in the race for the second wild card.

?That?s 10 out of 11 at this time of the year, under these circumstances where you can?t hiccup. Our guys have been outstanding. Everybody. Pitching, hitting, coaching staff ? they?ve all been great,? Maddon said.

And no one is a bigger fan of the second wild card implemented this season than Tampa Bay?s manager. The Rays remained three games behind Oakland for that second wild card.

?I really love the competition. I think it?s great,? Madden said. ?My hat?s off to these other teams, I think it?s great. It?s good for baseball. The two wild card system seems to be working this year. Mission accomplished.?

The Rays go home to play the Orioles, who are tied with the Yankees for the AL East lead. And Oakland is at home against Texas to wrap up the season.

Chicago?s chances are pretty much mission impossible. They White Sox have lost 10 of 12 and fallen three games behind Detroit with three to go. Chicago?s hope: win three straight in Cleveland and root for the Royals to sweep the Tigers in Kansas City, forcing a one-game tiebreaker Thursday.

?Obviously we?re up against it now, but we?ll continue to play,? Chicago?s Paul Konerko said. ?That?s what we do and what we?ve done all year. It doesn?t look good obviously. ? You never know what can happen. The main thing is to get us in order and go win a ball game tomorrow.?

The White Sox held at least a share of the lead from July 24 until Wednesday and had not been this far back since late May. Their starting pitching has come up short and they have hit .153 (13 for 85) with runners in scoring position during the dozen-game slide.

?We didn?t play good enough. The effort was there. The work was there. Everything was there. We just didn?t get it done,? White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski said.

Price (20-5) improved to 12-1 with a 2.26 ERA in his last 18 starts, allowing two runs and five hits in seven innings. He became the fourth 20-game winner of the season, joining Washington?s Gio Gonzalez (21-8), the New York Mets? R.A. Dickey (20-6) and the Los Angeles Angels? Jered Weaver (20-4).

?We still have a chance to get in with a good series against Baltimore ? We need a little help from Texas, but we have to continue to win and hopefully we get back in like last year,? said Price, the first 20-game winner in Tampa Bay history.

Asked who he would vote for if he could cast a ballot for the AL Cy Young, Price wasn?t shy.

?I would vote for myself,? he said.

And Maddon agreed with his ace lefty.

?The 20 wins, he should have like 25 wins,? Maddon said. ?He?s pitched well enough to have mid-20s based on our lack of scoring runs sometimes. The ERA is highly impressive, pitching in this division, this league, the DH. ? It all matters. To be able to accomplish that here is quite an accomplishment.?

B.J. Upton his hit his 27th and 28th homers, and Tampa Bay also got a solo shot from Ryan Roberts.

?You know you pretty much have to win them all,? Upton said, sizing up the Rays? chances.

Chicago starter Jose Quintana (6-6) got in trouble before the game was barely three minutes old, giving up a leadoff triple to Desmond Jennings and Upton?s two-run homer.

Roberts hit a two-out homer in the fourth made it 3-0. The White Sox rallied in the bottom half when Alex Rios delivered an RBI single and Dayan Viciedo hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

Upton?s leadoff double in the fifth finished Quintana, who allowed four runs and six hits in four innings. Evan Longoria hit an RBI double and Ben Francisco added a sacrifice fly off reliever Nate Jones to make it 5-2. Upton homered again in the ninth against Addison Reed.

NOTES:.Pierzynski had his family at the game. He is eligible for free agency and this might have been his final home game in Chicago. Pierzynski, who came to Chicago in 2005, said he?d love to finish his career with the White Sox but understands that might not happen. He?s had a career-best 27 homers. ? Rays C Jose Molina (right quadriceps strain) was out of starting lineup for fifth straight game but caught the bottom of the ninth.

Hotel Transylvania ;D [Please Look!! (:]

Topic Tags:

Thinking about starting a roleplay, but don't have the idea completely finished? Post it here, not in the main OOC forum!
So, last night I went out with the family, and due to having an eight year old brother we went and saw the new animated movie called Hotel Transylvania. At first I wasn't too sure because I hadn't seen any previews, and I figured if Tim Burton didn't toss it out there...It would be a flop. But! I can honestly say I enjoyed the cutesy movie greatly. :T Anyway! If you haven't seen previews, watched the movie, or have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about: Here you go. If you don't read the whole thing at least read the plot, because I most likely won't be able to explain it too well below. xD

Anyway!
Basically the movie is about "Dracula" opening up a hotel, a resort, that monsters can go to to escape from "humanity" so to speak, so monsters can be safe from human civilization. The main reason he really opened it was to protect his daughter from humans like he promised his wife he would ever before she died. Anyway! That's not the point, really. To cut to the chase it's his daughter's 118th birthday, and he's throwing her a huge party. All these "monsters" go to the resort to celebrate, because the Dracula's are well-known and liked. Somehow a human stumbles across the hotel, etc, etc, etc. READ THE PLOT! :P

Then again..
You don't really have to(though I prefer you do) because my idea for a role play is a little different. I was thinking that it could follow the movie along the lines of "Dracula" having a hotel in Transylvania for monsters to come to, he's celebrating his daughters 118th birthday(because that's like the simple "18" to humans) and a bunch of "monsters" come to celebrate. But instead of just one human stumbling upon the hotel while they're exploring out in the forest, a few humans do while "Camping" to so speak. They think it's a huge "costume party" while not knowing they're really among the "monsters" they're told about in town.
I figured it could go on from there, being strongly character-based. Literate. Realistic picture use.

Would anyone be interested in joining if I make a role play like that? Any Ideas? Thoughts?? I would LOVE some feedback. Please and Thank You. :)

Thanks for taking the time to read this!!!
