DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? A fire swept through a two-story garment factory in Bangladesh's capital Saturday, killing at least seven female workers and injuring another five, police and fire officials said.

The fire at the Smart factory occurred just two months after a blaze killed 112 workers in another factory near the capital city, raising questions about safety standards and treatment of workers in Bangladesh's $20-billion garment industry that exports clothes to leading Western retailers. The country has more than 4,000 garment factories

The cause of the latest fire was not immediately known, fire official Abdul Halim said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Monzurul Kabir told The Associated Press that the bodies of seven women were recovered from the top floor of the factory in Dhaka's Mohammadpur district. He said the factory was making pants and shirts, but could not provide further details.

Halim said it took firefighters about two hours to bring Saturday's blaze under control.

Volunteers joined firefighters in battling the blaze as a large crowd gathered outside the factory awaiting word on the fate of relatives. Family members were seen crying near the body of a female worker named Josna, who was only 16.

Kabir said the factory was making pants and shirts, but could not provide details.

Earlier this month, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. alerted its global suppliers that it will immediately drop them if they subcontract their work to factories that haven't been authorized by the discounter. The stricter contracting rule, along with other changes to its policy, comes amid increasing calls for better safety oversight after the deadly late November fire at a factory owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd. that supplied clothing to Wal-Mart and other retailers. Wal-Mart has said the factory wasn't authorized to make its clothes.

Wal-Mart ranks second behind Swedish fast fashion retailer H&M in the number of clothing orders it places in Bangladesh. Before the fatal fire there, Wal-Mart had taken steps to address safety, such as mandating fire safety training for all levels of factory management.

Building fires have led to more than 600 garment work deaths in Bangladesh since 2005, according to research by the advocacy group International Labor Rights Forum.

Judge: Release unredacted Calif priest files

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Los Angeles judge has ordered the release of personnel files that would identify Roman Catholic priests accused of child molestation.

Superior Court Judge Emilie Elias also said Monday that she wants the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to unredact the names of church higher-ups.

How long the process will take remains unclear. Church attorneys expressed concern about combing through 30,000 pages of documents.

Elias is continuing to meet with attorneys following the hearing.

So here is the mystery. If the gene is not mutated in the great majority of the breast cancer patients, why are the tumors showing a low level of the BRCA1 protein? The BRCA1 gene is not unique. Many normal (perfect shape, non-mutated) genes exhibit a mysterious abnormal (increased or decreased) production of proteins in cancer.

And, breast cancer is only one example.

Oak Ridge boys perform for former president

The members of country band the Oak Ridge Boys cut short Christmas vacation plans to regroup and perform over the phone for ailing former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.

The bandmates were touched when they received word from Bush's wife Barbara, suggesting they call the president and sing to him to help lift his spirits as he battled a "persistent fever" in a Texas hospital.?

And singer Duane Allen has confirmed he and his musical pals jumped at the chance to perform for their fan.

He says, "The Oak Ridge Boys received the daily report from President Bush's staff. The report of his health was that he was improving each day. Then, we received another message - Barbara Bush requested that we call the president and sing to him! All of the Oak Ridge Boys are on vacation, but we all headed to our office upon hearing of this request. We called the President and sang for him. He asked to hear Elvira, so we sang that for him, and then we sang one verse of Amazing Grace."

Bandmate William Lee Golden adds, "President Bush, Barbara and their entire family (are) some of our most treasured friends. My partners and I were so honored to help lift spirits by singing... over the phone to him and his family. We wish him speedy recovery."

And Allen adds, "You know I am always proud to be an Oak Ridge Boy but at a time like this... in a moment like this... I am really proud of us. We just did a good thing."

The phone call appears to have had the desired effect.? 88-year-old Bush was transferred out of the hospital's intensive care unit on Saturday after his health improved.

A statement from Bush's office reads: "Words cannot properly express how much The Oaks' special performance meant to the President and the Bush family. This friendship goes back many years, and what happened yesterday gave the President a real shot in the arm as he, thankfully, continues to improve."

U.S. approves J&J drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment

(Reuters) - U.S. health regulators have approved a new Johnson & Johnson drug for patients with tuberculosis who do not respond to other treatments, the company said.

The drug is the first in 40 years to tackle the disease using a new mechanism of action, according to J&J. The drug blocks an energy-producing enzyme that tuberculosis bacteria need to survive.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug, chemically known as bedaquiline and called Sirturo, on Monday following a positive review by an advisory panel last month.

The advisers found the drug to be effective, though they noted that more deaths were seen in the group of patients who took bedaquiline in combination with standard treatments than in the group that took standard drugs alone.

Chrispin Kambili, medical affairs leader for bedaquiline at J&J's Janssen Therapeutics unit, said in a recent interview that the company is studying the difference in death rates but has so far seen no common pattern.

Almost every death was due to a different cause, including a motor vehicle accident. What was unusual, he said, was the low rate of death in the placebo group.

Advisers to the FDA expressed concern that a greater number of patients had elevated liver enzymes, a potential sign of liver toxicity, and elongated QT levels -- an electrical irregularity in the heart that can cause sudden death.

But Kambili said none of the patients died due to serious QT prolongation and there was no unifying findings in the data.

In 2011, nearly 9 million people around the world became sick with tuberculosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and there were 1.4 million TB-related deaths.

Kambili said J&J's drug is designed for a relatively small portion of patients - some 650,000 - who do not respond to existing therapies.

And while investment analysts at Cowen and Co have forecast peak annual sales of the product at a relatively modest $300 million, the drug is important from a public health standpoint, Kambili said.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is caused by strains of the bacterium that have become resistant to at least isoniazid and rifampin, the two most potent drugs for TB.

J&J shares dipped 0.2 percent to $69.36 in early trading.

US troops sent to Chad to evacuate diplomats, citizens

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama says 50 US troops have been deployed to the African country of Chad to help evacuate US citizens and embassy personnel from the neighbouring Central African Republic's capital of Bangui in the face of rebel advances toward the city.

Obama informed congressional leaders of Thursday's deployment in a letter yesterday citing a "deteriorating security situation" in the Central African Republic.

The evacuation of the US diplomats comes in the wake of criticism of the Obama administration's handling of diplomatic security at its consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in a September 11 attack.

In the Central African Republic, rebels have seized at least 10 northern towns. Yesterday, they continued their advance, seizing the city of Sibut, 183 kilometres from Bangui.
