LA JOLLA, CA May 7, 2013 The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) today announced a five-year agreement with Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Janssen) to collaborate on focused research projects in the infectious disease area, with the initial project targeting the influenza virus. Under the agreement Janssen will receive certain license rights to the results of the research. Janssen Pharmaceuticals will collaborate in the research on influenza through its Crucell Vaccine Institute.

"We're delighted to partner with Janssen in this work that could have a significant impact on human health," said Michael A. Marletta, president and CEO of TSRI. "The new agreement leverages the institute's significant strengths in structural biology to move forward new therapies and vaccines."

Scott Forrest, TSRI's vice president for business development, added, "This deal is the latest example of our corporate partnership strategy, in which we seek focused collaborations to match companies' specific areas of interest with areas of expertise among multiple TSRI labs."

The new agreement builds on research on the influenza virus conducted jointly by TSRI and Janssen's Crucell Vaccine Institute. Previous collaborations have resulted in several high-impact publications, most recently in August 2012 in the journal Science.

Seasonal flu typically causes more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths every year in the United States, according to estimates by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Pandemics pose a greater dangerthe Spanish Flu of 1918-1919 may have killed 50 million people worldwide.

The new strategic collaboration with Janssen follows TSRI's announcement of a five-year agreement with Bristol-Myers Squibb last June; that agreement covered the development of chemistry methodologies and related work.

Forrest notes that promising future areas for corporate partnerships at TSRI include Oncology, Neurodegeneration and Immunology.

From Carriage Horses To Chihuahuas And Cockatiels, An Appeal ...

A mayoral forum Monday offered candidates a rare chance on the campaign trail ? to prove they?re the biggest ally to the city?s furry friends.
BRAWL NEW LOGO.jpg
Seeking to one up each other on four-legged bona fides, the hopefuls mixed policy proposals with boasts about their vegetarian kids and their families? beloved pets.

Republican John Catsimatidis used his opening statement to tell how his family summoned the FDNY for an elaborate rescue of his daughter?s cockatiel ? which was successful ? and his wife attempted mouth to mouth resuscitation on their dying cat, which was not.

Not only that, but he has ?cat? in his name.

?I?m John Catsimatidis. Some people call me 'The Cat Man.' I love animals,? he said.

In making the case for a bill barring landlord from denying apartments to seniors because they own pets, former City Councilman Sal Albanese cited a chihuahua named Joey he said had helped prolong his mother in law's life for several years.

When she passed away, the pooch was the ?estate? that he and his wife inherited, he said.
? Not to be outdone, former Controller Bill Thompson said his family had adopted two rescue cats.?

And Controller John Liu offered up a strong opinion on pet owners who shell out thousands on so-called ?pure-bred? animals. ?We?ve rejected that notion for human beings. Why would we allow that to continue for dogs and cats?? Liu said. He backed a measure to require city pet stores to sell only animals from shelters or rescues.

If having pets in the family was a talking point, so too was having vegetarians.

?I have a confession to make ? I?m not a vegetarian yet,? said Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, who quickly noted that his two kids are. ?I am very proud of the fact that my wife and I have raised two vegetarians.?

Candidates who didn?t show for the forum were tarred as anti-animal. Catsimatidis, who, like the others on the panel, thought the mass extermination of geese in Prospect Park in 2010 due to aircraft safety concerns was overkill, threw in a swipe at rival Joe Lhota. ?

?My opponent?wanted to kill all the deer in Staten Island,? he charged.

But the biggest punching bag was City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a longtime target of the group that hosted the forum, New Yorkers For Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets, which is part of an anti-Quinn political committee that has aired attack ads against her.

Allie Feldman, who heads the group, set the tone by asking audience members to take out their phones and call Quinn about banning horse carriages.

?There is one thing that everyone in this room can agree on and that is that Christine Quinn has not been a friend to animals,? she said.

Later, each candidate was offered a chance to speculate about why Quinn would not take action against the carriages, and each echoed the charge first made by Liu that it?s because ?she hasn?t gotten the OK from Mayor Bloomberg.?

But only de Blasio supported NY CLASS?s key goal of completely banning the horse-drawn carriages, while others talked about testing out alternatives or phasing them out gradually. ?

?This is inhumane,? de Blasio said. ?We don?t say, look at that, it?s inhumane, but it?s so quaint and historic, lets continue it. It doesn?t make any sense.?

Update: Quinn spokesman Mike Morey said: "Chris Quinn is the proud owner of two rescue dogs and although she disagrees with the organizers' goal of banning carriage horses, as Speaker of the City Council she has a strong record on animal rights, including expanding funding for spay and neutering programs through an overhaul of licensing fees, increased safety measures for kennels, and she passed laws cracking down on the abuse of animals. Furthermore, as mayor she has committed to making the New York City shelter system a NO KILL shelter system."

'Sunday Night Football': Carrie Underwood replaces Faith Hill

By Tim Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Carrie Underwood has assumed the title of "Sunday Night Football's" resident country-music singer.

"American Idol" winner Underwood has been tapped to replace Faith Hill as the singer of the opening theme song, "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night," NBC said Tuesday.

Underwood will make her "Sunday Night Football" premiere on September 8, as NBC kicks off its first "SNF" broadcast of the 2013 NFL season with a faceoff between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants.

"I am thrilled to be a part of NBC's 'Sunday Night Football' and am so honored they asked me," Underwood said. "I have always loved football season, and it is so exciting to now become part of it every Sunday night!"

"Sunday Night Football" producer Fred Gaudelli added, "Carrie Underwood was our first and only choice to perform the 'Sunday Night Football' opening. She's one of America's most popular entertainers and the perfect fit for our show."

Hill announced that she was leaving the hugely popular sports show in April, noting on Twitter, "Amazing 2 have been part of SNF - an honor. I've just let everyone there know it's time 2 let someone else rock the open."

Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Roberts to Step Down

Detroit Public Schools has been controlled by an emergency financial manager for four years, first under Robert Bobb, then Roy Roberts. The school system had a $327 million deficit. Enrollment in Detroit schools is down to 53,000 students, only 42 percent of kids in the area. Roberts announced he's stepping down as emergency manager, says ABC 7 WXYZ. May 16 will be Roberts' last day in office.

Changes Under Roberts

Roberts, 74, a Muskegon, Michigan, native, came to DPS in 2011 from years in management at Lear-Siegler, General Motors, and an investment firm. Roberts highlighted his accomplishments in his tenure in the district in his retirement message: improved school culture, staff, and internal operations. Additionally, DPS says he was able to keep open 24 of the 28 schools slated to close. The emergency manager made other changes that weren't so well-received. A few months after he took office, Roberts was faulted for using district funds to buy a new $40,000 Chevy Tahoe, says MLive. There were concerns that a district deep in debt couldn't afford the EM's $250,000 salary, let alone a new car. A mandatory 10-percent pay cut had been imposed on teachers, and the vehicle purchase was faulted for diverting educational funding from student needs.

DPS Emergency Management Impact

Rev. David Alexander Bullock, via his group Change Agent Consortium, has long worked against emergency management. I asked him about Roberts' career in retrospect. As one of the first entities placed under an EM, DPS's history lends historical perspective. Rev. Bullock said the fact that DPS still needs an EM after having had one for four years "opens the question of whether emergency management works." He added, "It demonstrates unprecedented experimentation in impoverished areas among those vulnerable."

What's Next for DPS?

In December 2012, DPS released its annual financial report, showing that it was both in the black and in the red. For the second year in a row, the fiscal term closed with a $10.9-million operating surplus. The General Fund deficit was $76.3 million, down from $283.9 million. Since Detroit Public Schools still owes, a new emergency manager will be hired to replace Roberts. ABC 7 WXYZ reports that Roberts has a nominee in mind for the new EM but hasn't said who it is. Roberts predicted that DPS will be debt-free in the 2015-2016 school year. Leadership, he said, will then revert to the school board, but the board will be under a supervisory team that will judge each action made or planned by the board.

Michigan Emergency Management

Roberts was appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder under Public Act 4 of 2011 -- the Local Government and School District Fiscal Accountability Act -- Michigan's emergency manager law. Emergency managers have far-reaching powers in entities they control. The law has had a topsy-turvy history in the state. It was stricken down by voters in the November 2012 election. Then, in the December lame-duck session, a tweaked version of it was passed, says the AFL-CIO. There are currently emergency managers in nine Michigan school districts and cities, including Detroit. Cities of Inkster and Allen Park are operating under consent agreement with the state, and Hamtramck's finances are under review.

A Michigan-certified teacher and education writer and blogger, Marilisa Sachteleben writes about school issues in her state's most pivotal city of Detroit.

No trendy restaurants. No fancy equipment. No hard-to-find hipster ingredients.

The pages of this year's top food publication don't read like your average gourmet glossy. That's because the only trend ChopChop magazine ? named publication of the year by the James Beard Foundation on Friday ? cares about is how to get America's children eating healthier.

Billed as the "fun cooking magazine for families," ChopChop was launched in 2010 by cookbook author Sally Sampson to give parents and kids the tools to fight childhood obesity. Though the magazine is available by subscription, one of its primary methods of distribution is by pediatricians giving copies to their patients.

The foundation's awards honor those who follow in the footsteps of Beard, considered the dean of American cooking when he died in 1985. The ceremony was held in New York, where the Beard Foundation is based. Friday's ceremony honored winners in media and publishing; a separate ceremony on Monday will be held for chefs and restaurants.

Earlier this year, tough talking television chef Anthony Bourdain made news for his jump to CNN. But on Friday, he was honored for his work on public television. His "The Mind of a Chef" was named best on-location television program. Meanwhile, Andrew Zimmern of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods America" was named outstanding host.

The cookbook of the year honor went to Maricel E. Presilla's massive ode to the food of Latin America, "Gran Cocina Latina." The 912-page book covers a tremendous swath of cuisines and cultures, explaining the common threads that run through the region's many foodways.

Prolific cookbook author Anne Willan was named to the foundation's Cookbook Hall of Fame. Willan has written extensively on the foods of France, including the cookbook "The Country Cooking of France," which won two Beard awards in 2008. In 1975, she founded the Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne cooking school in Paris.

In the blogging world, the group food blog award went to DarkRye.com, the edgy web magazine of grocer Whole Foods Market. The site focuses on the blending of food, health, sustainability, design, tech and social enterprise. The individual blogger award went to Hank Shaw's "Hunter. Angler. Gardener. Cook." The site follows Shaw's effort to hunt, gather and cook much of his own food.
