Be a Memorable Job Seeker? for the RIGHT Reasons | The Savvy ...

This past summer, a 20-year-old looking for work garnered Nicolas Cage more press attention than he received at the releases of ?Season of the Witch,? ?Kick-Ass,? and ?Ghost Rider? combined when she sent a photo of the actor in lieu of her resume to a potential employer.

York University student Vanessa Hodja posted a screenshot of the email and crazy-eyed picture of Cage to her Tumblr page writing, ?I ACCIDENTALLY SENT MY POTENTIAL FUTURE BOSS A PICTURE OF NIC CAGE RATHER THAN MY COVER LETTER + RESUME.?

Hodja gained instant online fame when the blunder went viral. Unsurprisingly, she wasn?t offered the no experience needed administrative assistant position she desired.

Hodja?s Nicolas Cage photo attachment may have been a mistake, but there are plenty of professionals looking for work whose attempts to get creative with their job applications made them stand out for all the wrong reasons. When it comes to getting crafty with job hunting, be memorable for the right reasons. Here?s how:

Think Outside of the Resume

Creative cover letters and resumes are the job applications of the future. They?re a great way for professionals looking for work to be creative and stand out from other applicants, and employers enjoy the innovative initiative. Video and infographic applications feature job seekers? personalities and special skills without making them seem like Nicolas-Cage-loving oddballs.

Highlight A Social Profile

CNN?s Doug Gross recently published a story asking, ?Are social media making the resume obsolete?? The article examined the growing trend of the social media job search?employers placing more emphasis on web presence and social profiles than the traditional resume. If you truly want to stand out in the application process, expand your resume to include a social media profile like Twitter or Pinterest that highlights your personality without discrediting your professional abilities.

Give Your Resume A Makeover

If new age job applications simply aren?t for you, consider giving your paper resume a fresh new look. Adobe InDesign is a great tool for spicing up a plain resume. Job seekers unfamiliar with design software can create simple designs in Microsoft Word or have their resumes printed on pre-designed templates. JobMob posted a nice collection of resume designs to get job seekers inspired.

Sometimes the simplest way to stand out in the application process is to precisely follow protocol. Most job seekers don?t mistake a poorly labeled picture of Nicolas Cage as their resume, but many do forget to properly follow-up after interviews, hurting their chance of receiving a job offer. A recent survey of more than 500 HR managers at companies with 20 or more employees revealed that 91 percent found it helpful for a promising job candidate to send a thank you note following an interview. When it comes to applying and interviewing for jobs, saying thanks is one of the simplest and best ways to stand out.

If you ever find yourself in a position where you made a horrible application mistake like Vanessa Hodja?s Nicolas Cage photo blunder, follow Jena McGregor?s advice on The Washington Post and don?t broadcast your mistake for the whole world to see.

Do you consider yourself to be a memorable job applicant? How do you stand out for the right reasons?

Florida Football: No. 8 Gators Beat Missouri 14-7

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Florida has reason to celebrate, although it's not enough to elicit much reaction from coach Will Muschamp or his players.

Mike Gillislee took a screen pass and went 45 yards for a touchdown, and the No. 8 Gators used stifling defense to stave off Southeastern Conference newcomer Missouri 14-7 on Saturday.

Florida rebounded from a turnover-filled loss to rival Georgia, clinched at least a share of the SEC's Eastern Division and eclipsed last season's win total.

The Gators hardly seemed to care.

"I took this job understanding fully the expectation is to go to Atlanta and win a championship," Muschamp said. "I've made my comment about how I feel about your season if that's not accomplished. We've made strides, but we're not where we want to be."

Florida could still get there.

The Gators (8-1, 7-1 SEC) need the Bulldogs to lose one of their remaining games, against Mississippi on Saturday or Auburn next week, to clinch a spot in the league title game.

At times, Florida looked less than interested in staying in the SEC hunt. The Gators were shut out in the first half, managing just 111 yards and failing to contain Missouri quarterback James Franklin.

But like it has in so many other games this season, Florida played considerably better in the second half.

The Gators turned two short fields into touchdowns, with Omarius Hines scoring on a 36-yard jet sweep to tie the game in the third before Gillislee put Florida ahead for good in the fourth.

"We gave up too many big plays," Missouri linebacker Will Ebner said. "We put this loss on our back because we allowed them to score more points than our offense scored. We're never going to blame someone else. You've got to have each other's back. We shut them out the first half, why couldn't we do it in the second half?"

Jeff Driskel lofted a pass to Gillislee in the right flat, and with two blockers out front, Gillislee made one cut and went untouched for his eighth score of the season.

The defense did the rest, stopping Missouri on six consecutive drives that ended in Florida territory.

"I always tell them, `You're the firemen. Go put the fire out,'" Muschamp said. "I don't care how bad it's blazing. Go put it out. And regardless of the situations and circumstances, when you walk on the field, your job is to stop them. ... It's an opportunity for greatness. You go out and make a stop on the goal line. You want to be great, be put in those situations and do it."

Florida's defense has done it all season, the main reason it's in this position, and the offense needed to be bailed out again against Missouri (4-5, 1-5).

The Gators finished with 276 yards, went 2 of 13 on third down and struggled to get anything going in the passing game.

Driskel completed 12 of 23 passes for 106 yards, with nearly half of that coming on the screen pass. Gillislee ran 16 times for 68 yards ? his fourth consecutive game under 70 yards. And Florida's offensive line was overmatched again.

"I'm a realist and I believe in being honest and calling it the way it is," Muschamp said. "And when it stinks, it stinks. ... We've been able to win and do what we had to do to win the games ? I'm not trying to downgrade it at all. This football team has as much resolve as a football team that I've been around."

That showed down the stretch on defense.

Josh Evans sealed the victory, intercepting Franklin's fourth-down pass in the end zone with 5 seconds remaining. The Tigers drove to the 21-yard line, but had to try to make something happen as the clock wound down.

"That's actually like a great feeling," Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd said. "Can their offense make big plays on a defense that's coming? We're relentless and that's how we want to play and that's how we strive to play every week."

Franklin, who sprained his left knee against Vanderbilt on Oct. 6 and sat out all or part of the last two games, finished with four interceptions. He completed 24 of 51 passes for 236 yards. He overthrew open receivers much of the day and had less mobility than normal.

"We just couldn't get any completions," Franklin said. "I know (teammates) are trying to have my back, but we can't turn the ball over four times."

Still, Franklin ran for 29 yards and burned Florida several times with scrambles.

Florida was flat to start the game, no surprise since it was a noon start and came after a disappointing loss against Georgia. The Gators turned the ball over six times in the 17-9 loss that left them needing help to get to Atlanta.

They vowed to play better this week, but it didn't exactly happen. They avoided turnovers, though, which is key for their grind-it-out style.

"When you have a defense like our defense has been playing, just don't turn the ball over," Driskel said. "We turned the ball over a lot against Georgia and we end up losing. It comes down to taking care of the ball and taking shots when they come."

Decrease in personal insolvency not all positive

Overall levels of personal insolvency have fallen 7.2 per cent in Q3, compared to the same period last year, although there was a?slight increase (2.45 per cent) on the previous quarter.

Figures released by the government?s Insolvency Service reveal that 28,062 people entered into bankruptcy, Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) or took advantage of Debt Relief Orders (DROs).

Meanwhile, Nick Reed, director and personal insolvency expert at PwC, said the news was not all positive.

??The decrease in total personal insolvency compared to the same time last year is positive and demonstrates the trend of people paying down debt,?? said Reed.?

?However, the levels of personal debt remain high and show a slight increase since the previous quarter. This is indicative of the squeeze that consumers continue to face and lies against a backdrop of the threat of unemployment. ?I don?t see this situation improving in the near future.?
Britain?s coastal communities also continue to suffer from high levels of bankruptcy compared to the rest of the UK, according to Experian, who say that certain pockets of the UK are in stark contrast.

The global information services company?s analysis of insolvency statistics found that of the top ten communities appearing most frequently in the highest concentration of personal insolvencies list, only one ? Motherwell, near Glasgow ? was inland. The analysis also revealed that eight out of the top ten bankruptcy hotspots are in Scotland.

Jonathan Westley, Managing Director of Consumer Information Services at Experian UK & Ireland, comments:? ?Our analysis shows that most of the areas identified in the top ten have also seen higher than average rates of business insolvencies, which may have impacted unemployment levels and pushed them to the top of the league table for personal insolvencies.?

Walmart Puts Its Boxee Where Its Mouth Is

By Brian Barrett

Streaming boxes are the future of television; there’s no point arguing it. The question is, who’s going to own it? Until now it’s largely been a two-horse race between Apple TV and Roku. But with Walmart throwing its retail weight behind the scrappy little Boxee TV, this rumble just got a lot more interesting.

Bodybuilding Supplements - Joint Health - Muscle and Fitness

By Jim Stoppani, Ph.D.

Glucosamine

A building block used to manufacture molecules called glycosaminoglycans (a major component of joint cartilage), glucosamine is effective at preventing wear and tear on joints from heavy lifting as well as reducing joint pain, studies confirm.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

This organic compound contains sulfur, which is required to form connective tissue. Research confirms that supplementing with MSM reduces joint inflammation and pain and promotes joint recovery.

Chonodrotin

A glycosaminoglycan (an important component of joint cartilage), chondroitin helps maintain structural integrity in the joints. It may also inhibit enzymes that break down joint tissue. Chrondroitin and glucosamine have a synergistic effect when taken together.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

This chemical makes up part of the synovial fluid surrounding joints and acts as a shock absorber by helping to resist compressive forces while lifting. Using HA helps to replenish the body?s natural levels, thereby reducing joint pain and improving joint function.

Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO)

Cetyl Myristoleate is a medium-chain fatty acid found in only a small number of animal species. Research suggests that CMO acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, as well as a lubricant for damaged joints.

One pack of Animal Flex provides an effective dosage of all these ingredients.
